Gwollu Hospital Crowned Best in UWR for Three Straight Years

By Mohammed Balu

Gwollu, (UWR), April 30, GNA – For three consecutive years, the Gwollu Hospital has been recognized as the top healthcare facility in the Upper West Region.

Dr. Mathias Tengan, the Sissala West District Director of Health Services, revealed during an interview with the GNA that his district has received recognition as the top healthcare facility following a comprehensive evaluation carried out over the last three years.

“In both 2022 and 2023, similar evaluations took place, and the district achieved first place in the UWR for the 2024 assessment. This award is the only category available for all the 11 districts in the region,” he said.

Dr. Tengan highlighted that the evaluation procedure examines three principal healthcare goals that cover every facet of a capable and cost-effective health infrastructure at the regional or district level. Upon consolidating the scores from evaluations throughout the area, it was found that the Sissala West District excelled above the others.

He went on to clarify that the assessment covered three main categories with a combined total of several metrics: ensuring comprehensive and effectively administered high-quality healthcare services across 40 indicators; decreasing preventable maternal, teenage, and childhood fatalities and impairments through 19 indicators; and enhancing availability to prompt clinical and public health emergency responses via 34 indicators.

This initiative relies on objective standards established by the Ghana Health Service with the aim of enhancing the healthcare system via focused leadership and management improvements.

Dr. Tengan conveyed his appreciation to the Regional Health Directorate for acknowledging their work and extended thanks to everyone involved, such as healthcare collaborators, medical staff, the Member of Parliament, the District Assembly, traditional leaders, assembly members, health committees, volunteer caregivers, and community participants for their unwavering dedication and support over the course of this initiative.

Dr. Tengan admitted that reaching this landmark was difficult and voiced his worry about the district’s plight due to widespread hardship, noting that numerous healthcare professionals avoid being assigned to work there.

As he points out, numerous individuals who file reports frequently request transfers to different sites, leading to a scarcity of workers needed to oversee the 56 healthcare centers spread across the district. This situation adds extra strain on the current workforce.

He, however, noted that with management support, guidance and a focus on discipline, the current positive performance could not have been realized.

He similarly expressed frustration over the lack of a District Health Directorate Office Complex needed to accommodate numerous essential units within the district.

“There are limited vaccine fridges for cold management of vaccines at the peripheral facilities with transportation challenge all impeding the work of the district.

He stated that there is no vehicle fit for use by the district health office or the local authorities for inspections, supervisions, and transportation of supplies.

The Gwollu hospital faces infrastructural inadequacies and lacks sufficient equipment; however, it has been included in the Agenda 111 hospitals initiative. Nevertheless, construction progress remains below ground level.
