Lucia Vambe: The UK's African Diaspora Champion in Healthcare

Personal Background and Migration

I grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe, where I cultivated a deep interest in healthcare. More than three decades ago, when I relocated to the United Kingdom, it was primarily to advance my education and explore better professional prospects. In this new environment, I had the chance to delve into mental health nursing, enhance my educational capabilities, accumulate valuable experiences, and significantly impact patient care. As with numerous immigrants, adapting to life in a foreign land posed various hurdles such as acclimating to a distinct culture, climate, and healthcare framework. Nevertheless, driven by determination, I embraced these chances fully. Concentrating diligently on my academic journey, I qualified as a mental health nurse and ultimately established myself within the National Health Service (NHS), which has been my workplace for more than two decades now.

Moving to another country has provided me with a fresh viewpoint. Although I continue to appreciate the charm and toughness of my homeland, I have also become aware of the deficiencies in healthcare systems, notably in mental health care provisions. To address this issue, I established the Zimbabwe Life Project (ZLP), aiming to contribute by imparting expertise, information, and assets to mental health practitioners in Zimbabwe.

Cultural Identity

Being Zimbabwean is an essential aspect of my identity. I maintain this connection via my profession, social circles, and principles. It’s important for me that both my kids and people close to me recognize and value our country’s customs. Values such as respect, fortitude, and communal spirit are integral to who I am. Sharing my cultural background occurs primarily through cuisine, music, and tales, yet predominantly through my involvement with ZLP—a network linking health practitioners between the UK and Zimbabwe. Indeed, I continue to observe Zimbabwean festivities, prepare authentic meals, and participate actively within the local Zimbabwean community. Our culture profoundly embodies Ubuntu—an ethos emphasizing mutual human regard—that influences all aspects of my professional life and personal engagements daily.

Links Between the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe

A deep historical bond exists between these two nations, and numerous Zimbabweans residing in the UK keep robust connections back home. The healthcare industry specifically has seen substantial cooperation—an area where I have had the privilege to contribute via ZLP. It seems evident that Zimbabweans in the UK earn respect due to their diligent efforts and valuable input, notably within fields such as healthcare and education. Nonetheless, misunderstandings regarding Zimbabwe persist. This drives me to emphasize sharing uplifting narratives concerning both our community members and what we can achieve together. Our role serves as a conduit across various domains including commerce, academia, medicine, and societal projects. For example, ZLP facilitates interaction among mental health practitioners from Britain and Zimbabwe, fostering an advantageous interchange of expertise and know-how.

Experiences of the People from Zimbabwe Living Abroad

Adjusting to a new culture, navigating immigration rules, and occasionally encountering discrimination are common hurdles faced by many Zimbabweans. Yet, we tackle these issues with resilience, robust community connections, and an unwavering dedication to excelling in our endeavors. We remain updated and involved with events in Zimbabwe via platforms such as social media, local community groups, and initiatives like ZLP. Numerous individuals also send financial aid to assist their families or fund community projects back home. I've had the privilege of receiving accolades in the UK for my contributions, including the Global Health Partnerships’ UK Africa Diaspora Healthcare Champion Award, the Queen's Nurse Award, and addressing sessions at Parliament—moments that brought immense appreciation. Nonetheless, periods of loneliness were prevalent during my initial years adapting here. Overcoming these challenging instances has largely depended on communal backing and consistent involvement.

Bridging the Gap

Increased cultural and professional interactions could prove beneficial. Such engagements foster greater mutual understanding among individuals. Personally, I have observed how healthcare workers from the UK who collaborate with ZLP in Zimbabwe return home with an enhanced respect for both the nation and its inhabitants. The diaspora significantly contributes to narrating the authentic narrative of Zimbabwe—highlighting not only challenges but also our community’s skills, creativity, and resilience. Their achievements in various sectors combined with their contributions toward Zimbabwe aid in altering perspectives. Via ZLP, we've organized exchanges specifically for mental health practitioners from Britain and Zimbabwe. This initiative involves sending medical personnel like nurses and doctors based in the UK to Zimbabwe to provide training and resource sharing opportunities; conversely, it invites experts from Zimbabwe to undergo advanced studies in the UK as well.

Individual Insights and Ambitions for Tomorrow

Zimbabwe will forever be my homeland. Although I might not reside there permanently anymore, my passion remains focused on enhancing mental health care within the nation. Significant advancements in healthcare facilities could lead me to spend more time actively engaged in work there. My desire is for others to look past the negative press. Zimbabwe transcends its difficulties; it's a land brimming with smart, diligent, and ingenious individuals. The possibilities here are vast, and with appropriate backing and governance, this country has the chance to flourish magnificently. Be steadfast in your identity, welcome chances as they arise, and consistently contribute to your origins. Integrating into your current surroundings is essential yet retaining memories of your beginnings should never fade away. Regardless of our locations globally, each one of us holds responsibility towards molding Zimbabwe’s destiny.
