Osun Screens Over 4,000 Market Women for Hypertension: International Edition

The government of Osun State has offered complimentary blood pressure checks to at least 4,126 residents, mostly marketplace vendors, in observance of this year’s World Hypertension Day celebrations.

The screenings were conducted at Sasa and Oke-Bale markets in Osogbo.

The health department of Osun State launched a street awareness initiative in the city with the aim of educating locals on the significance of routine blood pressure screenings.

Dr. Adeola Aderinwale, who coordinates non-communicable diseases at the Osun State Ministry of Health, provided insights into the program through a statement issued in Osogbo on Sunday.

She mentioned that apart from the medical check-ups, the initiative was designed to educate people at the marketplace about the risks associated with hypertension.

"We united with our global counterparts to commemorate this occasion and spread awareness throughout every part of the region. We informed our community members about the risks associated with high blood pressure and stressed the significance of consistent medication intake," stated Aderinwale.

She disclosed that 4,126 people underwent screening at the outreach event, which included stops at both Sasa and Oke-Bale markets. Additionally, awareness initiatives took place in the nearby regions.

"Aligning with this year's World Hypertension Day theme, 'Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer,' we stressed the importance of individuals seeking out qualified healthcare providers to obtain precise blood pressure measurements," she noted.

At the gathering, Mrs. Adijat Maruf, who leads the Sasa Market in Osogbo, encouraged locals to prioritize their well-being and steer clear of practices that might result in hypertension.

"Representing the Sasa market vendors, I thank our governor for providing us with this chance. It’s crucial that each one of us takes health issues seriously. High blood pressure can be very risky, so let's collaborate to avoid it," she stated.
