Bulawayo Celebrates International Yoga Day

On Sunday, Bulawayo participated in the global celebration of International Yoga Day, an observance established by the UN over a decade ago.

Organized by the Indian embassy, this gathering drew numerous attendees from various backgrounds to the Cricket Academy Excellence in Suburbia. Among them were notable figures such as India’s ambassador to Zimbabwe Brahima Kumar, Deputy Minister of Industry Rajesh Indukant Modho, and Minister for Bulawayo Province Judith Ncube.

As she greeted the ambassador, Ncube reminisced about her time at the city council where she was involved in various mental health initiatives within the community.

"We cared for individuals with mental health issues, assisting them both physically and psychologically via yoga and meditation, thanks to Sister Urvashi, who guided the concluding session today," she explained.

Ncube additionally expressed her desire to collaborate with the organizers in upcoming festivities to boost participation in these events. The ambassador mentioned that India aims to strengthen its relationship with Zimbabwe.

"I'm delighted to learn that Zimbabwe is now the SADC chairman, as we eagerly anticipate their contributions on this matter. Since India successfully got the African Union included in the G20 summit, we have high hopes for collaboration," Kumar stated.

Now that they have become a full G20 member, and considering SADC’s proximity to the African Union, I am eager to see how we can enhance our relationships and work together to advocate for the emotional and mental health of our citizens.

We are prepared and eager to contribute in our own manner as well.

Councillor Adrian Moyo from Ward 2, who spoke on behalf of Mayor David Coltart, characterized yoga as both educational and illuminating.

I gained significant insights, particularly regarding concentration, equilibrium, and wellbeing. This experience also deepened my comprehension of Indian culture, making it an enriching cultural exchange.

The session held significance as it tackled contemporary issues like mental health struggles, which people face today without having sufficient venues to effectively deal with these challenges.

Thus, yoga helps fulfill some of those requirements.

Mhodi cited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who spoke at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 about the advantages of yoga, stating that "adopting a different way of life and increasing awareness can assist us in addressing climate change."
