July 10, Tamale, GNA - Dr. Malcolm Mambuoraa Dery, a physician working at Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), has urged people to steer clear of lifestyle-related illnesses, which largely stem from everyday routines.
He urged the public to manage their everyday routines and ways of living to avoid various health problems including obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, strokes, cardiovascular conditions, and specific types of cancer.
Dr. Dery, who is also a neurosurgeon at TTH, spoke during a health awareness event held at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Tamale.
The gathering aimed to inform churchgoers and local residents about the significance of avoiding chronic illnesses.
Dr. Dery recommended that people engage in regular activities such as walking and running, along with minimizing prolonged sitting, to keep their weight under control and avoid obesity, lower cholesterol levels, and enhance both physical and mental fitness.
He encouraged citizens to refrain from smoking and reduce their intake of alcoholic beverages, opt for meals with low carbohydrate levels, consume plenty of protein, use minimal oils, and increase their intake of green leafy vegetables and fruits.
He called on people to steer clear of fast food and chilled beverages, limit excessive amounts of salt or sugar in their meals, and consume more water.
He recommended that the attendees consistently monitor their physical condition to detect potential illnesses at an early stage, allowing timely intervention.
